My mission in this work is to provide professional development and support for educators, families and students who have received special education services in high school...to make a successful transition to the college/post-secondary world.
The goal in this professional development and training work is to help families, students, educators and advocates to gain an understanding of the difference between services and accommodations for students from K-12 to college/post-secondary settings. Through this knowledge, families, educators and advocates can help to prepare these students for success by gaining an awareness of college expectations and fostering independence, metacognition and self-advocacy skills leading to their success.
As a retired Associate Dean of Student Support Services at Middlesex Community College for 27 years, I managed an innovative, nationally recognized alternative program model for students with significant learning challenges, the college's Disability Support Services supporting 1000 students with documented disabilities as well as Federally funded TRIO programs for 1st generation, low income and students with disabilities.
Over the years I have seen that as students who have received services on Individual Service Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans enter the post-secondary arena, the need for clarity and information on the process for this successful transition is needed. My goal is to help students, families and high school personnel to gain an understanding of the difference between services and accommodations for students from K-12 to college/post-secondary settings and how best to prepare their students for success.
